Marathon Petroleum Company LP has an opening for a Process Safety Professional at its refinery located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This position is located in the Environmental, Safety & Security (ES&S) organization and reports to the Process Safety Supervisor. This position does include relocation.

The Process Safety Professional ensures refinery compliance with MPC process safety standards and provides guidance and expertise to ensure refinery PSM/RMP and safety programs meet or exceed regulatory requirements. Additional duties will include interfacing with regulatory agencies, participating in incident investigations, etc. Position requires close interaction with operations and maintenance personnel, project engineers, regulators, and public.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interprets and/or develops SLC Refinery process safety policies and guidelines, develops methods and procedures for implementing them, and audits conformance. Advises appropriate managers and supervisors of the Company's goals and requirements; provides guidance and technical assistance in organizing and establishing programs to implement such requirements.

  • Functions as site HSE Incident Coordinator, PHA coordinator, and provides primary support for maintaining PSM tracking systems.

  • Provides general Process Safety Support to the site

  • Assists in Identifying current and developing process safety problems/issues and regulatory compliance/changes and/or emerging issues and provides recommendations to address such problems.

  • Monitors compliance with process safety policies in assigned areas; directs related reports and recommendations to appropriate personnel.

  • Investigates significant refinery HES incidents such as loss of primary containment, injuries, etc. to determine cause and contributory circumstances; confers with appropriate personnel to plan and initiate steps to prevent recurrences; informs management of action taken.

  • Develops process safety information, manuals, training material and programs; informs employees of related policies and procedures; conducts appropriate training sessions.

  • Participates in trade associations activities such as AFPM. Maintains a working knowledge of issues and key industry contacts and disseminates pertinent information.

  • Ensures credible partnering relationships with all refinery department staff in order to properly influence process safety mindset, compliance, and ownership of process safety systems.

  • Ability to work with databases and PowerBI a plus.

  • Maintains sufficient professional expertise and proficiency in discipline to achieve Company expectations and perform technical assignments.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum, or related) with 2 years of relevant experience; Bachelor’s degree in HES-related field with 5 years of relevant experience; or High School Diploma or GED with 10 years relevant experience in a process industry is required.

  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

  • A valid driver’s license is required.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years of process safety or engineering experience in a refinery, petrochemical plant or other related heavy industry preferred.

  • Working knowledge and experience implementing process safety elements

  • General understanding and application of the process, process hazards, corrosion mechanisms and safeguards in a refining / manufacturing environment.

  • Understanding and application of qualitative and quantitative process safety risk evaluation methods on simple scenarios and processes.

  • Understanding of PSM and RMP regulatory requirements as well as industry recommended practices related to process safety.

    This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level. It is currently posted at a Grade 11-12 level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
