Control System Specialist
Job Summary
The Marathon Kenai Alaska Refinery has an opening for a Control System Specialist. This position will provide process control systems support in the refinery. The Process Control Specialist will be assigned to support unit(s) and will be expected to provide assistance as needed to other units where an individual’s knowledge and experience are applicable. Primary resource for hardware and software maintenance and lifecycle planning for refinery control systems. The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4 - 10 hour days - Tuesday-Friday, after hours calls may be required and support of TAR once every 3 years.
Key Responsibilities
Hardware and Software Maintenance
Monitor DCS, SIS, and PLC performance, evaluate and act on system alarms to correct problems.
Replace failed DCS and SIS hardware
Perform PMs on DCS equipment
Perform PMs on SIS equipment (some with unit running, some with unit down).
Maintain PM procedures for DCS, PLC, and SIS equipment and maintain completed PM documentation
Coordinate vendor work on DCS, SIS, and PLC equipment
Lead for MOCs required for control system hardware and software changes
Lead DCS and SIS software and firmware upgrades
Maintain a spare parts inventory for all DCS and SIS equipment
Own DCS and SIS system failure metrics (hardware and software), update problem reporting database.
Point of contact for Operator console concerns in the Central Control Building and Satellite Control Rooms.
Support Application for system configuration of DCS servers and DCS consoles, SCADA HMI servers and operator consoles, OPC servers, communication interfaces and servers
Read and take action on DCS, SIS, and PLC vendor product alerts and notifications.
Read and take action on SCADA HMI vendor product alerts and notifications.
Lead for projects to refresh DCS and SIS hardware and perform software version updates.
Troubleshoot PLC hardware issues.
Maintain inventory of PLCs and develop/implement lifecycle maintenance plan for hardware and software updates.
Create SAP requisitions for PCG purchases
Assist DCS OT (Refining IT Operational Technology) group with removal of failed Process Control Network equipment from the live network. Equipment to be repaired by the DCS OT group.
Process Control Management
Troubleshoot controller performance issues.
Support I&E Maintenance with new control loop implementation and existing loop troubleshooting.
Update DCS data historian
PLC programming
SIS programming
Process Control Support to Operations
Attend area team meetings
Participates in Area Team presentations to Refinery Leadership Team
Available to be on-call as part of scheduled rotation
Alarm Management
Maintain alarm database for assigned units
MOC responsible person for implementing alarm changes
Participates in alarm rationalization
Process Control System Management
Maintain DCS and SCADA HMI graphics standards and libraries
Update DCS and SCADA HMI graphics
Build new PI points as needed
Incident Investigations
Trained in site incident investigation management tool
Participate in process control related incident investigations
Participate in incident investigations for assigned units as requested
Small and Large CAPEX Project Roles
Participate in project design, FAT, SAT and implementation of new DCS and SIS hardware.
Support projects as lead for new PLC installation.
Support commissioning of new DCS control loops and SIS applications
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
Must have a High school diploma or GED AND 10 years relevant process control, instrument/electrical or electronics experience in the Refining, Petro-chemical Industry or other related heavy industry. OR an Associate of Science degree (or higher) AND 5 years relevant process control, instrument/ electrical or electronics experience in the Refining, Petrochemical Industry or other related heavy industry.(Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)
Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Allen Bradley SLC PLCs, GE 90-30 and RX3i PLCs, Foxboro I/A, Wonderware Intouch, GE iFIX, Triconex is preferred.
